Colombia...OMG (Volume 1)

In my last piece of literary genius, I focused on some of the “different/WTF” things that I have encountered in Colombia. Now, let’s look at the incredible, unforgettable, and OMG experiences this South American country has to offer.

The Pr$ce of Beer

I LOVE beer. 🍺 And what’s better than a cold beer on a hot day? A fukn cheap beer on a hot day!

Colombia has a vast selection of tasty cerveza and the cost is unbelievably low. For example, you can get a 6 pack of Colombian beer for as low as $5 NZ or $3 US!

That’s less than a dollar for a standard 330mil beer. Oh mi dios (OMG), as they proclaim here in Latin America.

Ciclovia - A cycleway like no other

Every Sunday, the city with maybe the worst traffic in the world does something unthinkable in places like New Zealand. The council closes roads so that cyclists and runners can enjoy a safe and traffic-free ride or jog.

It's called “La Ciclovia.” 🚲

From 7 am to 2 pm on Sundays and public holidays, (more on them shortly) the usually jam-packed motor vehicle streets across Bogota are transformed into a hybrid of cyclists, rollerbladers, runners, and people walking their dogs.

It is a wonderful scene filled with colorful leisure wear, an impressive selection of dog breeds, and the odd bald white guy sweating profusely (apologies to everyone.)

Wait… How many public holidays do they have?

Colombia celebrates, please hold caller… 18 public holidays!

Cue Shakira - “Whenever, wherever… 💃🏼

I would name and explain them all for you, but even my devout Catholic mother-in-law can’t remember why half of them exist. If you live in Barranquilla (Shakira and Sofia Vergara’s hometown) you get 2 more holidays thanks to their Carnival.

It would be unfair if I didn’t mention that workers in Colombia only receive 15 days of paid annual leave. But hey when you have 18 public holidays, who cares right? Pass me a cold cheap Colombian beer… SALUD! 🍻
